Natural rubber balloons offer a renewable alternative to synthetic materials, with distinct physical and chemical properties that set them apart from plastic-based products. This guide outlines the material characteristics, environmental considerations, and responsible use practices associated with NRL balloons.
At a Glance: Key Facts
- Material: Made from natural rubber latex (NRL), a renewable resource tapped from rubber trees.
- Plastic-Free: Chemically distinct from synthetic plastics; derived from natural polymers.
- Sustainable Sourcing: Latex for rubber balloons can be sourced from FSC® certified forests.
- Responsible Use: Follow EBPC guidelines to minimise environmental impact.
- Toy Safety: Our custom printed balloons comply with the EU Toy Safety Directive; which includes appropriate warnings on packaging.
Material Properties
Natural rubber latex is harvested from the Hevea Brasiliensis tree, primarily grown in tropical regions. The latex is a natural polymer, not a plastic, and is classified as an elastomeric rubber due to its unique stretch and recovery properties.
Manufacturing Process
- Latex is collected and dyed using pigments.
- Balloon moulds are dipped into vats of liquid latex.
- Vulcanisation occurs in a hot-air tunnel, strengthening the rubber.
- Balloons are removed, washed, and dried.
- The polymer structure remains unmodified throughout the process.
Environmental Credentials
Biodegradability
Independent lab studies under controlled soil conditions have shown that natural rubber can biodegrade by over 50% within one year, depending on formulation and environmental factors.
More information: Independent lab test
- These results are not representative of marine, landfill, or natural environments, where degradation is slower.
- No current ISO or ASTM standard exists specifically for latex balloon biodegradability, though efforts are underway to develop one.
Sustainable & Renewable Sourcing
- Latex is harvested by tapping mature rubber trees, which are not cut down in the process.
- The latex used in our balloons can be sourced from FSC® certified plantations, ensuring responsible forest management and support for local communities. Please ask at point of quotation for this.
- FSC® certification helps mitigate deforestation risks and promotes biodiversity and carbon sequestration, supporting sustainable forestry and local livelihoods.
Responsible Use
We encourage all customers to follow the European Balloon & Party Council (EBPC) guidelines for responsible balloon use:
- Avoid balloon releases.
- Dispose of balloons properly after use.
- Use weights and ribbons to prevent accidental release.

Toy Safety
Balloons are classified as toys under EU law and are subject to strict safety standards:
- Compliant with EU Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC.
- Packaging includes appropriate choking hazard warnings and age recommendations.
